The Ultimate Night Out
Start Location: Hongik University Station, exit 4
2 Chicken Joints. Street Food Crawl. Unlimited Beer.
Chicken and beer is an obsession in Korea. It is one of the best ways to enjoy an evening with friends and new acquaintances. It's also a great way to take a plunge into Korean night culture.
This tour is not your typical "chimaek" tour. We don't just drop you off in a park with a bucket of chicken. We take you through the history and future of this uniquely Korean institution.
You'd better get your eating and drinking hat on because we go to TWO chicken places in the lively Hongdae area and dig into some unique street eats in between. It's the Korean version of the tapas crawl.
First Stop: Classic Korean Fried Chicken--The Real Deal
The first stop is a traditional '90s style "chicken hof," where the full-flavored free-range chicken has thin crispy skin with Asian aromatics. This isn't the Americanized versions that you get outside Korea. We get this three ways--fried, with sauce, and garlic style, where it's smothered in stewed garlic. This way, we're eating our way through the history of Korean fried chicken.
Second Stop: Crazy Street Food Alley
As we tour the vibrant Hongdae streets, we'll duck into an alley with some stalls set aside for street food vendors. There tends to be a good bit of experimentation there, so we never know what's going to be there next. Fun ice creams. Takoyaki. Belgian Fries served conveniently atop a cup of beer. Foot-long chicken skewers. Korean-style popcorn chicken with nacho cheese. It's always an adventure.
Third Stop: The Future Of Korean Chicken & Beer
The final hard-to-find stop is on the quirky side--we're in Hongdae after all--themed like a military bunker. The chicken morsels here come with their own sauce and slathered in cheese. It sounds odd, but guests have said it's the most classically Korean tasting item on the tour and their favorite. We also try some other pub grub goodies while enjoying beer out of authentic canteen cups from World War II. The music in this place is surreal as well. Many times, when we've wrapped up the tour, some guests have stayed behind to lose themselves in the atmosphere and music.
