Chicken and beer is an obsession in Korea. It is one of the best ways to enjoy an evening with friends and new acquaintances. It's also a great way to take a plunge into Korean night culture. You'd better get your eating and drinking hat on because we go to THREE chicken pubs in the lively Hongdae area. The first is a traditional '90s style "chicken hof," where the full-flavored free-range chicken has thin crispy skin with Asian aromatics. We get this three ways--fried, with sauce, and garlic style, where it's smothered in stewed garlic. The second stop is an old-fashioned barbecued chicken place. It's dark, and quiet, and exudes character. The slightly spicy smoked chicken comes out on a sizzling iron plate, covered with barbecue sauce. The final stop is on the quirky side--we're in Hongdae after all--themed like a military bunker. The chicken morsels here come with their own sauce and slathered in cheese. We also try some other pub grub goodies while enjoying beer out of military cupware.
