The Ultimate Night Out
Start Location: Hongik University Station, exit 3
3 Chicken Joints. Unlimited Beer.
Chicken and beer is an obsession in Korea. It is one of the best ways to enjoy an evening with friends and new acquaintances. It's also a great way to take a plunge into Korean night culture.
This tour is not your typical "chimaek" tour. We don't just drop you off in a park with a bucket of chicken. We take you through the history and future of this uniquely Korean institution.
You'd better get your eating and drinking hat on because we go to THREE chicken places in the lively Hongdae area. It's the Korean version of the tapas crawl. We usually go to three places when out with friends--called 1-cha, 2-cha, 3-cha.
First Stop: Charcoal-grilled Chicken, Korean BBQ style.
We start off with a little DalkGalbi dinner. It's charcoal grilled chicken cooked at your table. DalkGalbi originated in the university town of Chuncheon in Gangwon Province to Seoul's east. Starting out as poor student fare in the 1970s, its popularity has grown. The charcoal grilled variation came out about a decade ago, and it's a rare treat. You're not going to find this outside of Korea.
Second Stop: Classic Korean Fried Chicken--The Real Deal
The second stop is a traditional '90s style "chicken hof," where the full-flavored free-range chicken has thin crispy skin with Asian aromatics. This isn't the Americanized versions that you get outside Korea. We get this three ways--fried, with sauce, and garlic style, where it's smothered in stewed garlic. This way, we're eating our way through the history of Korean fried chicken.
Third Stop: The Future Of Korean Chicken & Beer
The final hard-to-find stop is on the quirky side--we're in Hongdae after all--themed like a military bunker. The chicken morsels here come with their own sauce and slathered in cheese. It sounds odd, but guests have said it's the most classically Korean tasting item on the tour and their favorite. We also try some other pub grub goodies while enjoying beer out of authentic canteen cups from World War II. The music in this place is surreal as well. Many times, when we've wrapped up the tour, some guests have stayed behind to lose themselves in the atmosphere and music.
